our take of i, robot

This film is a "rotten tomato", according to the percentage of top-critic reviews on rottentomatoes.com. The critics who enjoyed the film were mainly impressed by the action of Will Smith vs. the evil robots and the visual effects that were outstanding in its time. The critics who disliked the film expressed distaste for the lack of meaning to the plot, providing the audience with more of an entertaining approach rather than a reflective statement, like a "video game you can't play" (Atkinson). We enjoyed the noble attempt to take a compilation of short stories that all have different plots, turning them into a coherent and entertaining movie. We wish the film provided a thesis showing the drawbacks of our rapidly increasing reliance on technology.

The movie made life with that level of technology seem utopian. There was no hunger or poverty. In fact it appears for the most part to be an argument for the increased usage of technology. What they needed was to increase its dystopian qualities by including poverty to show the drawbacks of replacing menial jobs with robots. They also could have played up the repercussions of replacing human interaction with robot emotional interaction.

The acting in this film is very ranged. Will Smith’s character bares many similarities to both of his characters from the Men in Black series, Independence Day, and the Bad Boys series. His wise cracking character doesn’t fit the intellectual and deep themes that Asimov presents in his book. On the opposite end of the spectrum we have Bruce Greenwood Hollywood’s go to guy for a douche-bag character such as Lawrence Robertson. He plays his part very convincingly such as when he places the gag order on the police department, his voice is dripping with disdain and pompousness.

To sum it up I, Robot doesn’t force your brain to think abstractly but it does entertain you with descent acting and jokes. Although it presents interesting ideas about our future coupled with thrilling action scenes, there are no ideas the movie should allow us to ponder: How would our world manage without our technology today? How evolution of technology weakens or strengthens our human qualities? At what point will we consult with technology about life decisions without seeking guidance amongst each other?
